Anti Bullying Advice For People Being Bullied
If you are being bullied, it is important that you get some good quality anti bullying advice. There is plenty of stereotypical advice which many people give, such as ‘just ignore them’ or give them ‘a hard punch on the nose’. This advice is rarely welcome by the victims of bullying because it usually comes across as dismissive. It shows a lack of understanding about the problem and a lack of sympathy to the victim.
Being able to ignore the bullies is very useful. There is a big difference though, between pretending to ignore the bullies and truly not caring about what they say or do. Good advice will tell the victim how to ignore the bullies. Especially with children bullied at school, they want to know how to solve the problem for themselves. It is great to get help and support but the best help is to show them how to do the skills they need.
The ‘punch on the nose’ advice is rarely appropriate. True, sometimes it can be a good option if you are being bullied physically but only if you are sure the bully will back down after the punch. If you are being bullied by three people bigger and stronger than you who are waiting for an excuse you give you the mother of all kickings then I suggest you avoid this particular technique.
The best advice to be had comes from those who used to get bullied but don’t get bullied any more. These people have learned how to stop bullying on their own and they have tried and tested techniques which work. People suffering from bullying at work rarely ask for advice, often because they would be embarrassed to ask for help. The best advice for them is to remind them that asking for help is a sign of strength. Every top business leader asks for help whenever they need it from whoever they think will be best be able to deliver.
